Tusquittee is a Cherokee word meaning “Where the water-dogs
laughed”; the Cherokee called salamanders water dogs, or
sometimes, mud puppies. According to Cherokee folklore, a
hunter was near Tusquittee Bald in the Tusquittee Mountain
Range and heard two water dogs walking and talking about how
their pond had dried up. They were making their way to the
Nantahala River to get through the dry season. As the hunter
listened, he heard one say to the other, “Where’s the water?
I’m so thirsty that my apron (gills) hang down," and then
both water dogs laughed.
