Nantahala National Forest
The Nantahala National Forest,
meaning “Land of the Noonday Sun” in Cherokee, is a beautifully preserved, forested
area in Western North Carolina. The Cherokee noted the forest’s dense hardwoods and realized that only at the height of noon could sunlight reach its inner portions. The Western NC Real Estate that borders the Nantahala
National Forest is some of the most gorgeous real estate in
the entire state. The forest is home to the Nantahala River which flows through its valleys and peaks, and it is also home to the Nantahala Outdoor Center, an area that was voted the #1 Water Tourist Destination by National Geographic Magazine.
The Nantahala National Forest is the largest of four national forest regions in North Carolina. It is divided into three ranger districts: The Nantahala District, the Wayah District, the Cheoah District, and the Tusquittee District. The 158,348 acre area that encompasses the
Tusquittee Ranger District is located in pristine
Cherokee County
North Carolina and
Clay County North
Carolina and is home to the Hiawassee River, Jackrabbit Mountain
Park, Lake Hiawassee, Lake Appalachia, and Lake Chatuge. All of the lakes in the
Tusquittee Ranger District are managed by the TVA. Also, the Tusquittee District
boasts the Tusquittee Bald, a high peak in the Blue Ridge
Mountains rising 5,280 feet above sea level.
Part of the Southern Nantahala Wilderness and forest extends into Georgia and the
Chattahooche National Forest. The Southern Nantahala Wilderness is comprised of 10,900 acres of land near
Hayesville NC and
Lake Chatuge. Here, the
Appalachian Trail passes through both states and leads
hikers on a long trek through the remote wilderness. Looking
