Hiawassee River
The majestic Hiawassee River
(spelled both as Hiwassee and Hiawassee) originates high on the northern slope of Rocky Mountain in Towns County Georgia, a beautiful
county located in North Georgia, and flows northward into
Western North Carolina and pristine Clay County North Carolina. As it flows through Georgia, it is called the Hiawassee River, and conversely, in North Carolina it is more widely known as the Hiawassee River. Its name
comes from the Cherokee word “Ayuhwasi” which means savanna or pretty meadow. As it flows passed several scenic valley towns such as
Andrews North Carolina,
Murphy NC, and
Hiawassee Georgia, it creates some truly breathtaking landscapes and North Georgia Creek Property. The Hiawassee River leaves North Carolina near the Northeast
Tennessee border and flows into a scenic area known as Reliance.
The Hiawassee River was dammed by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the 1940’s to create the reservoir
Lake Chatuge. For great
